Joseph's Gift

Joseph’s Gift, a 501© (3) non-profit, is a major recipient of donations from the American Legion South Bay.  Post 184 strongly supports Joseph’s Gift and their Veteran support efforts with monetary donations, gifts, supply drives, packing and delivery efforts, and other support requirements.  Joseph’s Gift works with local schools and community organizations like The American Legion South Bay, creating care and hygiene packages for our deployed military, fundraising, and supportive efforts for our wounded warriors here at home. Joseph’s Gift believes that the best way to honor the memory of their fallen hero, Joseph, is to support his brothers and sisters in arms with their needs.  Ms. Dawn Anzack, President of the organization, shares that Joseph’s Gift works to provide holiday presents for children of our wounded and fallen warriors and children of active military in financial need, such as a special-needs child. Additionally, Joseph’s Gift continues to expand its efforts to include the support of homeless veterans and their requirements.  The American Legion South Bay is proud to support Ms. Anzack and Joseph’s Gift throughout the year with monetary, fundraising, and assistance drives in support of her organization’s efforts.

Boy Scout Troop 718

The Legionnaires of Post 184 started their support of Boy Scout Troop 718 two years ago, acting as the Troop’s charter organization, or “CO.” Mr. Lee Lickhalter heads up the charter responsibilities.  The charter is a formal agreement that allows the CO to use the Scouting program to serve its members and the community. The CO can be a school or community group like The American Legion South Bay Post 184. Every Scout Troop needs an organization like Post 184 to be their charter organization. We provide oversight for the troop, and they own the overall scouting program. Post 184 Legion members are there to help the Scouts succeed in their various efforts!  Additionally, Post 184 has been the recipient of many Eagle Scout and Scout Merit Badge efforts. The Scouts have repaired, fixed, and painted many parts of our facility and supported events here, too.

The Code of Honors is held at Post 184’s Hall twice a year, and the Scouts use the Post 184 hall for their ceremony and our backyard for their celebration. Merit badge day is open to the whole Scout district and is held frequently. We are very pleased to have the Scouts utilize our facilities for their efforts.

The Scout slogan is Do a Good Turn Daily. That means doing something to help others daily without expecting anything in return. It means that Scouts do their part to care for the community and the environment. As Scouts plan activities and progress toward goals, they experience personal growth. All of us here at Post 184 appreciate their efforts.

Boys And Girls State Program

American Legion South Bay Post 184 strongly supports the Boys and Girls State programs.  The American Legion Boys State and American Legion Auxiliary Girls State are summer leadership and citizenship programs for high school juniors, which focus on exploring the mechanics of American government and politics. The programs are sponsored by the American Legion (AL) and the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA). Boys and girls are usually nominated by their high school during their junior year. Boys and Girls State programs began in 1937 and are held in each U.S. state.  Post 184 sponsors individuals for the week in Sacramento and donates for travel expenses and other costs. Participants spend an entire week learning the complexities of citizenship: rights, privileges, and responsibilities. The environment isn’t just a classroom; there is lots of hands-on experience, and the participants will learn the backbone of governance: the structure of city, county, and state government based on the California State Constitution.  The program aims to cultivate a diverse generation of informed citizens equipped to tackle tomorrow’s challenges and uphold the principles of democracy, integrity, and service to others.

Poppy Program

Our American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) runs this well-known fundraiser twice yearly!  The semiannual ALA Poppy Program kicks off right before Memorial Day and Veterans Day each year.  Millions of red crepe paper poppies are distributed nationwide in exchange for donations directly assisting disabled and hospitalized veterans in our communities.  Connecting the visual image of the poppy with the sacrifice of service made by our veterans has been an essential goal of the American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Program since its inception in 1921.  Click on the link to read more about our Semi-Annual Poppy Program.

Since the early 20th Century, our Auxiliary Unit 184 has been a Part of Post 184, and from the beginning, we have raised money with members and the public’s generous poppy donations.  This money can and will only be used for Veterans, Active Military, and their families.  We encourage you to look for your Poppy in the mail!  This effort and many other programs are sponsored by, and we are the ~200-strong American Legion South Bay Auxiliary 184 members.
