Legion Auxiliary Unit 184

We are the male and female spouses, grandmothers, mothers, sisters, and direct and adopted female descendants of members of The American Legion. Some of us are veterans, too! The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 184 (the “ALA”) is one of the nation’s most prominent supporters of veterans, military, and their families and helps advance The American Legion’s mission. From helping to draft the GI Bill in 1944 to advocating for veterans on Capitol Hill, the nonpartisan American Legion Family is instrumental in advancing legislation that improves the quality of life for our nation’s veterans and service members. Our mission supports everything from Patriotic Youth Programs to Advocacy Efforts like Flag Etiquette and Advocacy, Troop Care Packages, and many other activities.

One of the more familiar programs is the ALA Poppy Program.  The semiannual ALA Poppy Program kicks off right before Memorial Day and Veterans Day each year. Millions of red crepe paper poppies are distributed nationwide in exchange for donations directly assisting disabled and hospitalized veterans in our communities. Connecting the visual image of the poppy with the sacrifice of service made by our veterans has been an important goal of the American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Program since its inception in 1921. You can read more about our semi-annual Poppy Program here: https://www.legion-aux.org/poppy

Our Auxiliary has been part of Post 184 every year since the early 20th Century, and we have raised money with your generous poppy donations. This money can and will only be used for Veterans, Active Military personnel, and their families. The effort is sponsored by, and we are the ~200-strong members of, the American Legion South Bay Auxiliary 184.

Several times each year, our auxiliary buys food and supplies for homeless Veterans. Recently, we collected $350 to purchase food and cleaning items for the Fisher House on the V.A. campus in Long Beach. The Fisher House is like a Ronald McDonald House but only for those associated with the Veterans Hospital. It is the Veteran’s “Home Away From Home” while medical procedures are being carried out. While the Veteran or Wounded Warrior is in the Hospital, the family stays for FREE at the Fisher House to be close to their loved one. Also, wounded or ill past or present military members may stay there if they have daily, ongoing treatment such as radiation. Recent generous donations supported 7 of our AUX members as they shopped and delivered $350 of food and supplies. If you would like to be a part of helping those who have sacrificed so much, please send your tax-deductible donations to:

Checks should be made out to ALA 184. Please write “Poppies” on the memo line. You may also drop your contribution off in the canteen at the post with any of the bartenders on staff, and they will give you a receipt. The Poppy program is just one of many projects that the ALA 184 works on during the year! The 200-strong members of The American Legion Auxiliary South Bay Post 184 are always looking for volunteers to help with our various projects, and of course, new members are always welcome and appreciated. We are a fun group of individuals who get great things done. Please feel free to call us at (310) 316-4520 for more information!
