The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic, mutual-help, war-time veterans organization. It is a community service organization whose membership stands at over 1.6 million in more than 12,000 posts worldwide. The posts are organized into 55 departments: one for each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, France, Latin America, and the Philippines. American Legion South Bay Post 184 was Chartered in 1920. Seven years later, on November 9th, 1927, the Post moved into a member-constructed Hall and facilities at 412 Camino Real in Redondo Beach, California. Additional facilities, including a new bar and lounge area, were added in the 1950s and again in the 1960s.
