What a great summer here at Post 184! There have been so many great events and fun times. We’ve also gotten a lot done in the last months and have several events we know you’ll look forward to in the coming quarter.
As always, we will remind everyone that this is your Post, and we need your support! Volunteerism and donations are what keep our Post 184 alive and moving forward. This 120-plus-year-old building needs repairs, and events always need your time and support to be successful. Whether you are a Legion, SAL, Auxiliary, or Rider’s member, there are projects that you can help out with! Also, remember, each of our organizations here has monthly meetings where you can come and participate. Lend your voice, bring ideas, and discuss them with your organization’s leadership. Did you know you can attend and participate in any meetings as a guest? You can and are welcome to do so. Post 184 is The Best! We ask that you participate, donate, and volunteer, and we thank everyone who does – it’s truly a community effort. The following are just some of the events and projects we’ve enjoyed and completed in the last months, in no particular order:
- Bar floor repaired! With the effort of many folks and Ms. Kelly driving the project, we completed the repairs and replacement of a large part of the canteen floor. We had been waiting on this project for quite a while, and yay! It’s complete! Great job to all who helped, donated funds, and supported. Excellent job, all. We have a new TV in the Pool Room too!
- Dodgers and Monday Night Football events. We thank everyone for their time and cooking efforts for these Monday night events. They raise funds for the organization that puts them on, and they are a fun way to get together on a weekday night, enjoy some food, and enjoy each other’s company. Everyone is so generous!
- The Scouts painted the meeting hall! It took over 250 hours of labor, many Scouts and leaders, and much hard work. Another Social media post with pictures is coming, but it was a super effort by all.
- The 4th of July BBQ event was a huge success, with a huge turnout. Many volunteers and supporters provided delicious Potluck dishes, and the SALs BBQed up a storm with great hamburgers, Hot Links, and Hot Dogs. It was a great time!
- The Auxiliary supported another successful Girls State, sending four local young women to attend the Girls’ State week. Ms. Diane’s Granddaughter was one of the lucky attendees. Congratulations again!
- The SALs and Legion also funded a similar program, the Boys and Girls State Program, for 2024. The two organizations provided transportation for many young adults to attend the event in Sacramento.
- The SALs held their semi-annual RIBFEST fundraiser, and the turnout was great. It’s a significant event for the SALs and a funding source for Veterans and other projects they support annually.
- One of the organizations we support is Joseph’s Gift, and we have held several events to collect items for Veterans who are serving and Veterans who need help. We are having a Packing event on August 26th at 5 PM if you want to join!
- Social Media, Email, and Web. In 2024, we posted several hundred Posts with Graphics and text to Facebook and Instagram and have over 1,300 followers, counting both services. Post 184 has been very active on social media! We can look forward to a brand-new website with a fresh look and great functionality, probably at the end of October. We have also updated our Email system with fresh graphics and a cleaned-up membership list.
- Post 184 sponsored our very own American Legion Baseball Team. This is part of the American Legion’s mission—great job by all in support of this effort. We purchased Uniforms and paid for umpires, too!
- Our Memorial Day event was beautiful. Everyone pitched in and supported it with great potluck dishes, and the SALs did their usual setup, teardown, and BBQ support. We thank The Auxiliary team for their help with serving, clean up, and overall support. It was a true team effort.
- A “Do You Know” campaign was provided to all members and the public, sharing the good works, Veterans support, and other philanthropic work that American Legion Post 184 provides, including Redondo Union Scholarships, Scouting support for Troop 718, First responder support by the SALs. We do so many great things here; it was essential to get the word out.
- The Auxiliary Poppy Campaign was held in May. Poppies were distributed via USPS, and a donation was requested from the person receiving the flower to support the future of veterans, active-duty military personnel, and their families with medical and financial needs.
That’s not a complete list by any means, but you get the idea. Post 184 isn’t stopping there! In the coming months, we had a great set of events late in the summer, including the Joseph’s Gift repack on August 26th, our Labor Day BBQ on September 2nd, The Rider’s annual Pig Roast fundraiser on September 28th, and our upcoming Veterans Day of Remembrance and BBQ on November 11th. Monday Night Football started on September 9th with food and fun – great turnouts!
Many things are happening at American Legion South Bay Post 184, and many plans are underway for additional improvements. Come to a meeting, volunteer, or donate a few dollars to the cause; we need your support. Post 184 is the BEST Post! Thanks for everything you do and for your donations and support. You are all what makes this place great. Be well, and we hope to see you in The Canteen or at a meeting soon. Remember, all organizations are running their 2024 – 2025 membership drives; please send in your membership renewals when you have a minute. Membership dues are an essential part of how we keep the doors open!
